Civil Defence depends on volunteers.  They provide the link between residents and the local Civil Defence organisation.  Volunteers have good knowledge of the area in which they live.  They are able to quickly gather information, assess the need for help and organise their communities to adopt a self-help attitude by preparing in advance for civil defence emergencies.

John Carter, Minister of Civil Defence, helped Hastings recognise the commitment of its civil defence volunteers at an event held at Hawke’s Bay Opera House in 2010. Eighteen long-service awards were presented on the night with seven of the recipients having given more than two decades of service to their community. Fifty rural fire volunteers were also presented with service honours at the event.  Read more in the Ministry E-Bulletin.
