Ash from volcanic eruptions on the central plateau and Okataina volcanic field has fallen over Hawke's Bay & Gisborne -  most recently in 1995 and 1996 when ash from Mount Ruapehu, one of our nearest volcanoes, closed airports.

1800 years ago one of the most massive volcanic explosions the world has known created Lake Taupo , and this deposited ash and pumice over a wide area (you can see the layers of ash in cuttings along the highways) and would have resulted in vast areas of bush being burnt away.

What's Stan's Plan when ash falls?
