This online resource is designed to support teachers in developing a unit of work about natural hazards in New Zealand, especially within Hawke's Bay and Gisborne in accordance with the New Zealand curriculum guidelines.
It looks at earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, storms & floods and tsunami.

The students section is aimed at Level 2-4 (Years 4-8) and can be incorporated as a learning experience in the classroom or informally at home.

We highly recommend teachers visit www.whatstheplanstan.govt.nz. This is a comprehensive resource for teaching Civil Defence Emergency Management in schools.  It contains links and information on other available resources including websites that can support teachers in further developing this unit of work.

Suggested Class Outings

Visit the National Aquarium Interactive Tsunami Display on Napier's Marine Parade.  The display is a learning centre with animations of tsunami and historical material and is well set up for class visits.  You can see how tsunami start after earthquakes or undersea landslides and then travel into the coast.  Historical information on the known tsunami around New Zealand is fascinating, including testimonies of tsunami survivors.  The display also has information on what to do. Visit the Hawke's Bay Museum 1931 Earthquake Display - Life on the Edge, which recognises New Zealand's greatest natural disaster.  This display, upgraded in February 2008, incorporates contemporary interactive technology.   It looks at the science behind determining the epicentre, our place on the Australian plate, faults in Hawke's Bay, the uplift that occured in 1931 and the measurement of earthquakes.  GEOSK one of the new interactive displays lets students look at data coming in from the geophysical networks - using seismographs and GPS - operated across New Zealand by the GeoNet Project.  The display also shows the impact on the lives of people in Hawke's Bay, has a great film of earthquake survivors who tell their stories, shows the vulnerabilities we face from earthquakes and teaches how to survive future earthquakes.
