Storms bring wind, rain, hail, thunder and/or snow.  Cyclones are very large storms that come down from the tropics towards the east coast bringing strong winds of more than 300km/hr that can push over cars & uproot trees and cause very heavy rain falls.

Floods happen when there is more rainwater than can soak into the soil.   Without stopbanks on many of our rivers, flood waters would pour through our homes, shops, farms and across roads, like in 1988 when flood waters from Cyclone Bola washed away the Wairoa town bridge.
